The 1951 team that opted out of the NCAA tourney appears to have
made a wise decision to go for the publicity. The Kentucky team that won the tourney was 32-2, the number two scoring team in the country, winning games 74-52 on average. Three players had big NBA careers, Frank Ramsey, Cliff Hagen and Bill Spivey.

The 1966 team that apparently opted out would have had to beat Texas Western (UTEP), the first team with an all black starting five. That might have been awkward if they made the final.
BYU finished second to Utah in the WAC that year.
