Thanks, interesting stuff. I also believe UCLA's run under Wooden made a big
difference. Before UCLA, as I understand it, the tournaments were not very different in terms of prestige — and if you go back a ways, the NIT was more prestigious. But UCLA's period of domination that started in 1964 (10 NCAA titles in 12 years), and the fact that they always went to the NCAA and not the NIT, cemented the fact that the NCAA was the more important tournament.
