In 1951, BYU went to the NCAA tourney, beat San Jose St. then lost to
Kansas St. after that they went to the NIT and eventually beat Dayton in the NIT final. Kansas St. went on to the NCAA final where it lost to Kentucky.
1951 was the first for the expanded NCAA tourney, 16 teams. Mostly large schools. The NIT
field was about half filled with smaller Catholic schools from the East.
