In my experience, technical ability cannot justify keeping someone that has "off field" issues. We've been dealing with this at my company, where we have this cancerous co-worker that everybody hates working with. He's arrogant, condescending, doesn't do certain types of work as he doesn't have the patience for it, can't carry things to conclusion. Oh his credentials are impeccable, mind you.

He's still here because he's buddies with the president, who will claim that's he's very important to the company because of his experience and technical knowledge, even though he has single-handedly driven away at least 5 or so other employees to quit. One dude lasted a week and was like "I can't work with this guy". This dynamic with the president and this loser drove away our CTO, put my boss into early retirement, and so forth.

The guy is hurting us way more than he's helping us. I've been around long enough now in my career to understand what many have said before, that hiring for technical skill alone isn't good enough. Much more important is the other stuff like positive influence, communication, values, culture, responsibility, ownership. Technical skills can be much more easily taught to someone with a good attitude than these other valuable skills can be taught.

I've seen enough in my career now to understand I'd be rid of this guy yesterday in your position. Not worth the headache.
