I think you misunderstand.
The "taken for a ride" isn't about whether or not Young is a good hire. He is.
The "taken for a ride" was about believing that A - BYU would be willing to spend the money necessary; and B - that the dude who is the top assistant in the NBA and up for NBA head coaching jobs would turn away from the NBA to coach at BYU.
He has noted he was wrong in his evaluation of both what BYU would spend and what Young would do if given the option.
