Those were signs he was being a good coach
It’s his job to make the team better and that means pushing players to be better or making tough decisions to replace them. Job #1 for any coach. I guarantee you those AAU coaches do the same things and have just as many parents and players upset at them for “playing favorites” or for being jerks and not playing their kid, etc

Obviously I don’t know anything of what happened behind the scenes but…you should never deny your coach in a game.
