He said that BYU should go independent in football. I shot down that idea by saying the MWC would have a "who do you think you are" attitude and never would allow BYU to participate in all other sports while letting BYU football go independent.
But the WAC? Now that BSU has bolted, what WAC school is going to say "who do you think you are" to BYU?
Utah State wouldn't have a problem with it because we already play USU every year (plus, not having BYU football in the WAC would increase USU's chances of winning the title).
This idea actually makes sense in a lot of ways, although the road trips to Louisiana for the Olympic sports would be a drag. Then again, the compensation for that would be road trips to Hawaii!
It's amazing to think that going independent in football really never was an option until Utah bolted because BYU was trying to be both nice and humble towards its closest conference opponent (BYU wouldn't have left Utah high and dry in the WAC/MWC by going independent in football even if it had been possible, but Utah would have understood if BYU would have left to join a BCS conference). Now that Utah has left BYU's conference, no such consideration holds back BYU from going independent in football and staying independent until (if ever) the Big XII comes a-calling.
It's a brave new world!
