The church would never do anything to separate themselves from the mainstream--it's just too hard and brings with it too many challenges. Besides, who would want to be considered "peculiar" anyway?

Just remember who stands at the head of the board of directors. Going independent doesn't have to be all about the money. In fact, I could see BYU going independent to avoid some of the trappings of money that are so prevalent in college football today.
