I think the main factor for BYU's large NCAA tourney rating, was Jimmer. I used BYU's low New Mexico bowl rating to contrast that, as I think other factors always come into things.

There is a reason why there are multiple VCU games on that list for highly rated games as well. Not because they have a large national fan base, but because they were a great story and people wanted to watch them.

While I think BYU has a better national fan base than VCU (and Utah), I do think a lot of people tuned in for the Jimmer phenomenon. I don't think that was such a ridiculous statement.
