about athletics, but there is quite a bit of academic carryover. If you look at the athletic side of expansion, the powers that be needed a 12th team for a conference championship game in football, and Utah has just the football program to fit the bill and make that happen.

As far as research goes, I'm sure BYU has plenty of great things going on, but the real money and prestige comes from the upper-level graduate research. It is a well known fact that more of this goes on at the University of Utah than at BYU. You've got financial figures to prove this, as well as a recent Nobel Prize winner that came out of Utah. These are things that the PAC12 liked to see when they were picking schools to expand with.
