The PAC had to invite a school with strong research credentials and that also has liberal social leanings to match up with the rest of the liberal PAC schools including the U of Colorado. Two great football seasons did not get the U in to the PAC. It was all about social issues and largely because U of California and Stanford would not accept a religious school. The other schools would likely have been OK with BYU.
