they're CFB fans who tune in to a compelling game. Their household reach far outweighs any distinction between the BYU and Utah fan base. As evidenced by the bowl ratings.
That's essentially what's driving the money for the Pac-12. Expanding their tv footprint to the entire country, not just the regional west. BYU fans make a lot of their large fan base but in the end, it's insignificant on the national scale. For now, Utah is the better story and has the stronger TV draw.
That's not why Utah selected but it's a good reason why BYU's #1 claim to supremacy over Utah isn't even relevant.
That can change in a heart beat if BYU started winning big games or if Heaps emerged as a Heisman candidate.
