I have a sneaking suspicioun that there is a subset of BYU fans who are very proud of the 1984 championship, and haven't watched many games since or only tune in until the first loss of the season. There's something damaged in the psyche of these people who prefer an empty 10-2 over a hard-fought 7-5 or 6-6. Guaranteed success is mediocrity and irrelevance. To compete week in and week out at the highlest level possible is the goal of athletics, not to accumulate accolades. I hope BYU leaves the folly of independence and joins a conference. If the BigXii is non-receptive, and the Big East is too bad, then be at the forefront of starting a new conference. There is no AQ status standing in the way and there are plenty of other respectable teams looking for a bold solution.
