Looking for a good companion dog.

We just got approved on buying a house (TIA), and I'm immediately looking for a dog. I've been thinking lab, but I've also toyed with the idea of a German Shepherd or a Doberman. I have 2 kids, a 6 and 2 year old. What would be the best fit, if I want to take the dog out on hikes, campouts, etc?
