If I hear one more person say dogs are pack animals, I'm
gonna scream. Everyone thinks that because that is just what we've heard and been taught all our lives. As a pet professional I have learned a lot of things that I didn't know about dogs due to having a former boss who was constantly researching and learning the newest scientific and otherwise news about dogs and their behavior. Dogs are not wolves, do not hunt like wolves, do not depend on a family structure to survive like wolves....and most of all have been bred for a LONG time to be a human companion, who depends on a human to survive. This is the best article I have seen describing it but there are others who have the same sort of info. http://www.caninemind.co.uk/pack.html

I just like to try and inform people, as the more informed we are about how dogs actually work and think, the more we can properly understand and train them, and the less irresponsible ownership of dogs we have. The first thing I hope to always get people to understand is why dogs are the way they are, and how their minds work and communicate with us.

Most people seem to equate certain behaviors as "dominance" issues and "pack behavior"-because they don't understand dog's true natures.
