The use was not widespread in 2002. It was only in a handful of college stadiums and had only been put in one NFL stadium.
Also it's changed a bit since then.
I've played on everything including the original astroturf. (Astroturf was literally on concrete or asphalt with a carpet pad over the top.) I've also coached and officiated for years on field turf. You notice a huge difference on your joints, especially knees and feet, after you've officiated four football games in a row on field turf vs grass.

The new artificial turf is so nice on the legs. I used to ref lacrosse on many of the HS fields in northern Utah,

Remember the first year that the new grass was used? Big chunks of it would dislodge leaving patches of open soil.
