if you live in Arizona. Not nearly so much if the field is in a more temperate state.
The carpet burn thing is overrated and not nearly as bad as the old astroturf. You can get burns with grass and dirt as well.

Remember the first year that the new grass was used? Big chunks of it would dislodge leaving patches of open soil.
