There's a layer of granular rubber
called infill that is softer than grass. There is also a layer of sand. I think you're still hearkening back to the days of astroturf which is an entirely different animal.

Clearly you haven't spent much, if any time on the surface. It's much easier to run on for extended periods and the landing is soft. There is the risk of abrasion but you also have that with grass/dirt fields.
