Well I would sure hope so. I'm not sure what else I would be doing.
You're right, there are more metrics involved. And within FEI, there are some important stats that really stand out. BYU's DAY was ranked 33rd. Above average. And their DED matches up nearly exactly with IsoPPP. They were #2 in DED to go along with #1 in Isoppp. Those are some of your major factors in the final score of a game, and they were all above average.
DTO was horrible and that dropped the overall rating, but it's not a big deal either, so I'm not going to consider it much. DTO is more of a cherry on top type of thing. Outside of that, they didn't have any bad rankings within FEI.
You're right, it hasn't appeared to be going in the right direction, and there have been more influences in the defense than just Tuiaki himself, whether anyone want to believe that or not. But he's got the DC title so he takes the blame. Next year, I'm sure we'll still see that title, but I'm willing to bet it's as much of a real title as Howell's was that year where Bronco took it back from him.
Just saying let's not exaggerate. Your post about getting worse every year and them all being horrible is simply incorrect and you can own that. 2018 was not only better than 2017, it was an above average defense PERIOD. There's no question about it and the most meaningful numbers back it up. So let's just leave that where it is.
But they have to fix things and they have to start "trending" up rather than down at this point. With missions and getting your guys in the program and getting guys older, it's time to trust them more and play more aggressive and settle on an actual identity. Those are their big problems.
For BYU, I think that means taking some hands off of the steering wheel, and adjusting who is sitting where in the car. We'll see if Sitake does that. Changes have already been made. Now it needs to materialize in August.
