I think he sits between BoD expectations that align more with the missionary and public relations agenda of the Church, and fan expectations that are stuck in 1984 (mine too). I don't think that's a comfortable place to be due to the misalignment when it comes to actual BoD investment in football program performance and fan expectation of what that investment should be. Tom is a class act, respected on the national scene, and has (football excepted) our athletic programs performing at a level of national prominence.
