I have somewhat adopted the idea of helping kids when they are starting out instead of giving them a lot of money when they are older (hopefully you don't die young). We have helped with education and down payments, etc. Paid for weddings and those types of expenses, without just buying it all for them. (We are state employees so we don't have a huge amount of wealth built up).
