Basketball is a completely different beast
Huge non conference schedule allows teams to show how good they are. Not all that uncommon for top conferences to send 6+ teams into the tournament.
In football, teams generally don’t play more than one or maybe two quality out of conference opponents. That limits how good they can look outside of the conference schedule.
