Bowl games are simply post-season games. It's always nice to have one more game a few weeks after the last regular
season game.
More football is a good thing. I'd rather watch BYU play in a lower tier bowl game than no game at all. Having one more game after
the regular season is over isn't dumb.

I suspect the early bowl date preference had more to do with getting the new staff going with recruiting and such
