The best team does not always win. I think most of us are aware of that.
UTEP's football team was not better than BYU's football team in 1985.
UTEP beat BYU but lost to all the other teams in the conference.
BYU lost to UTEP but beat all the other teams in the conference.
I guess you could make a bad argument that UTEP was better than BYU that season since they beat BYU, but you get into some crazy contradictions when you go that route.
