Put it this way:
Let's say that I'm arranging my preseason rankings for next year, and Clemson and Bama both bring back their entire staff and roster. I'm still putting Alabama at #1 and Clemson at #2. Alabama is a better team, and the odds would still favor them in a matchup. If they were to play again a week from now, Bama would be favored.
