There are certain personality types attracted to climbing Everest

and the appeal is generally wanting to accomplish something extremely difficult, gaining prestige from it, and psychologically being on top of the world. The reality is it's very masochistic, but I give props to anybody who climbs it for accomplishing something extremely difficult.

Article said they found him dead in his tent — sounded like alone. He may not have been on a fully guided trip.

It's not a technically difficult climb, but that has never been the challenge of Everest. And no you probably can't...
