His point is that the primary driver of university demand is actual academics

If you think athletics is a marketing tool that current students should pay for as part of administrative costs, fine. But BYU's admins don't see it that way. To them, it's a premium perk that students should pay extra for rather than forcing uninterested students to subsidize.
