Lol, I can honestly say I never once took the subway escalators
As yeah, I'd assumed they were pretty much treated as a public toilet. I feel bad for the handicapped riders who have no choice but to take them.

We lived in Darien CT. Most our neighbors worked in NYC and took the train. ~1 hr. Darien was awesome!
