General NYC rent rule is your annual salary needs to be 40x monthly rent
At least that’s the general rule of what landlords will rent to you, that is probably insane nearly everywhere else in the country, and you should probably avoid coming close to that if possible.

Example: if your annual salary is $120,000, a landlord will approve you for up to $3,000 a month rent.

Use the app streeteasy to look for apartments to see what you’d be able to afford in certain neighborhoods.
