I think ultimately, BYU had this magical run under Lavell and Lavell had a huge part of that happening. It lasted so long that it built generations of massive fans with high expectations. Since he left, everyone wants to see the team return to those levels, but it's like catching lightning in a bottle. I'm not sure it will ever happen on a consistent basis. But when you do have a great team, what situation sets up for a more magical run? I would say going with a conference does because you won't be sacked with 2-3 losses playing heavy hitters and end up in your pre-arranged bowl and instead can go 11-1 and play in an NY6 game.
