So many factors in that.

High-profile recruits not panning out. Only having one season in independence with a quarterback starting each game. Hiring inexperienced coordinators that didn’t work out. Hiring a first-time head coach that has certainly had a tough time.

Maybe an MWC-era type of schedule would have helped mask some of these issues, but then again, BYU has had its struggles at times against the MWC while independent.

Hawaii, UCONN, Northern Illinois all had special seasons, the likes of which BYU has never had.
