Its not about any one problem. Yes, the coaching has been terrible, but the execution has also been inconsistent and we've played some teams that have deeper talent and better coaching.
Those of us that believe Independence has not worked understand football as much as the next fan. But we, at least for me, also enjoy the natural rivalries that come from a conference affiliation and the annual chase for a conference championship. We will never get that in Independence.
And in my opinion, the natural rivalries already exist in the MWC as well as the opportunity to play programs that are competitive and also on par with our athletic talent. Nor does it present the travel challenges that an affiliation with the AAC would.
BYU has some unique and wonderful attributes that limit our ability to recruit great talent in the numbers that other big programs can. You can argue all day that we need to abandon those attributes, but we won't and we shouldn't. They're much more important than college athletics.
Independence is not working and never will.
