I prefer smoked to traditional oven roasted, but everything you mentioned in
preparation I also completely agree with (drybrining, etc.). One other thing I have also done which seems to do well is to butterball the turkey.

I don't follow this exactly, but he does talk about a lot of concepts that I think work well in smoking a turkey (or cooking it in an oven as well):
