Totally agree, he didn't throw a punch, he put up his arm. Yes, he hit the guy
and technical or flagrant or whatever is fine, but it was egregious to eject him. Uncalled for. Poor refereeing.

Atiki was definitely in the wrong but it was the refs fault he gave the forearm

I thought Atiki WAY over-reacted. Really uncalled for.

This is a over-reaction, its uncalled for!

It was an uncalled for learning experience. Atiki will be fine.

Iwas surprised by how defensive the blow was in comparison to how it was being

I think they were both going after each other

It was the follow through that got him ejected. He defends himself and then

meh, that's just a long armed guy creating space, IMO.

Agree, but the result was a low cost lesson for the inexperienced developing Atiki.

the lesson is what, though? If a guy comes running at you to just stand there?
fattycoug
1/21/22 11:53am
If you forearm a guy in the head, regardless of provocation, it could cost your team the game. Guy made a move at Atiki,

i guess my main difference with people is that I don't really see it as a

What i saw is the guy pulled back in plenty of time for Atiki to drift away from the confrontation. Refs also must have

We are discussing a basketball game and not a street fight.

This is the right take, most clearly expressed.

I respectfully disagree, for 2 reasons:

i agree that the dude may not have been coming at him. I think he may have been

Fair or not, that will be called flagrant every time. Atiki has to learn from it and avoid that kind of contact.
roseyscenario

so, specifically, what should he have done? I, personally, would likely

There's plenty of times when guys get in each others faces during games

he had barely just gotten on his own feet with a guy that was tangling with him
fattycoug

There was no need to defend by pushing. One can create space by giving ground.
hydrocoug

he was coming at him, what replay did you see.

It was a shot to the head, but on a guy who was coming to get in his face

The ref was late indeed, but not the ref's fault that Atiki responded that way

Obviously, but if you blow the whistle at first contact then you help cool two

It was a “back off” move on the aggressive side

Disagree. No need for Atiki to give a forearm to the face.

Why? if there was a foul called then it stops the play and atiki doesn't swing
GlutealGuy

It was Atiki's fault he lost his temper and lashed out. The end.
Roko's Basilisk

But its the refs job to call fouls and when they don't it gets out of hand

It's totally fine (preferable even) to not call anything when a couple of guys

Did anyone else think about Pope asking Atiki if he was "ever going to back down from anyone" after the big win in SF.

That is exactly what I thought about. I wonder how much of that is lost in
