That's not too crazy an assertion. I guess my thought of where he is (4th round) means that dropping is a lot more dangerous than rising is helpful.
Especially given his injury issues, the more consistently difficult schedule, the loss of almost all his OL, I think it makes sense for him to go. That said, as a fan, I want him to stay. He can be the Commander's backup QB project later.

I suspect the early bowl date preference had more to do with getting the new staff going with recruiting and such
