Time to go back to the Mountain West Conference.
I think we should push efforts to rejoin the MW Conf.

Currently there are 12 teams in it and if Hawaii were dropped and replaced by us we would have a great conference including many old established rivals and a greater travel cost savings. Many of those teams that weren't in the old MW are now some of the games we play anyway, like BSU, Nevada, Utah State and Fresno.

Having a conference would allow for us to have a set of measurable goals as in win the conference, qualify for a good bowl game, and seek to make the top 20-25 ranked team at the end of the season. If we were to join and dominate the conference we then would attract more attention for a move "upward" in conferences. Our basketball schedule would take a leap forward as to quality as well.

Having a conference would also allow us to measure the effectiveness of our various coaches against their "peers". Currently without such a measurement all the football program has to do is win enough games (6) to qualify for a bowl game and "all is well". A realistic goal of our programs will not be focused on a NC (very difficult and almost unreasonable goal) or nothing when the end result has been a lackluster season as in 8-5.

Granted there probably are financial hurdles with broadcast rights involved and also an issue of "BYU Pride", but I don't see us moving forward at any rate with our current status as an Indy. Not sure if these hurdles are deal killers or not but rejoining the MW appears to be a solution.
