Because conference decisions are permanent or near permanent.
Setting aside that fact that you think that being in the MWC that last couple of years would be better than being independent (which a completely disagree), what you are saying is that there is no future hope for independence or for moving to a better conference at all. You are assuming independence will be stagnant and what you see now is what you are going to get for the next 25 years. I just don't know, given the rapidly changing landscape, how you can some to that conclusion.
