Isn't the more likely fix to your growth scenario
to cut the number of schools that qualify for FBS status and then expand the big 5 conference to 16 teams? I don't think population growth and growth in football popularity means that the existing industry simply expands to accommodate additional conferences. One way you avoid having to compete with the MWC is to do do what they have always done in the past when the MWC got too big for its britches. Pick off the top couple of teams and invite them into your fold and kick the rest to the curb. Your MWC power grab was feasible with a conference of BYU, Utah, Boise State and TCU. You see how people reacted to that happening.

What should happen to FBS is that it should be cut from 120 to 80 teams and the 40 cut should be playing in a lower division. The 80 remaining should then be divided among 5 conferences of 16. That seems more realistic to me than thinking people are just going to stand by and let the MWC cut into their market.

From a BYU perspective, I do not personally think BYU would join the MWC and then leave for the B12 if an invite came. Not that they couldn't, but I don't think they would. BYU just doesn't play like that. We make commitments and we stick with them regardless of what the law or contract says. If we rejoin the MWC, I think it's a near permanent move. So I think independence by far gives us the most flexibility and future options to maneuver as college football changes.
