Regardless of what percentage of the cost...
it amounts to the real issue is the morality of it. Those that feed on human tragedy to enrich themselves, then try to justify it and claim they are just trying to improve care or procedures or whatever bs it is they are trying to claim, are the issue. And it isn't just in medical tragedy these guys do this, I've seen lawsuits filed against search and rescue workers, the state government because some parents got drunk and passed out and their kid got eaten by a bear, a guy who swung a bat in an on deck circle at a baseball game and hit a small child in the head because the parents had negligently allowed the kid to walk out onto the field, and I could go on and on and on.

Don't let these guys try to convince you that they are acting in the best interests of society, that is not their motivation. They are motivated by the same thing to OP was trying to malign companies for, personal enrichment, self gain, wealth. Now there is nothing wrong with working to enrich yourself, but there is plenty wrong with some of the methods people use to do it.
