If most of the LDS kids came to BYU, it would be perrenial top 20 too
I have followed BYU recruiting pretty closely for 30+ years.
What you advocate was the BYU strategy in the 90's.

At this point in time, if you put the top 25 LDS recruits in every class, they would be a top 15 ranked class every year, and that is only going up.

In the 80's, there was an LDS blue chip recruit 1 time per 2 or 3 years, and we got probably 80% of them. That trend continued into the 90's, but there were 1 or 2 every year. The last 5 years, there is about 7-8 per year, but we only get just over 2 per year, the recruiting efficiency has decreased for the top end, by a lot.

If BYU was effective as it used to be in the LaVell era with LDS kids, we would go from the 65ish rankings to the 25-30 rankings, that is a huge improvement in talent and is what BYU needs get back to in order to survive the new reality of the P5 divide in college football. The talent is there, we need to return the efficiency that we used to have.
