I was listening to a Sheriff talk about this on a radio show a few years ago
He went in to great detail about what is required for someone to use lethal force. In CA it has to be more than just a reasonable fear. It has to be a clear and real physical threat to you or someone else.

Obviously it varies state by state. As we saw with Florida and their "stand your ground" stance. Texas I think is similar.

Someone brought up the issue of "what if someone breaks in to your house?" And his opinion was that unless the intruder posed a direct threat to you, ie, comes to attack you, you would not be legally justified in killing him.
