If BYU is going to play a high pressure, man defense they are going to have
to get better numbers.

You can hang on longer in a zone than in press man. BYU has to get to the QB sooner and more often.

Passes thrown per sacks/hurrys

2016: 10.2
2015: 6.3
2014: 9.0
2013: 9.8
2012: 6.5
2011: 7.8
2010: 7.7
2009: 7.7
2008: 7.2
2007: 9.1

And, more to the point, the PER of our opponents was 132 which, other than the 128 in the bad defense season of 2008, was far, far worse than anything else BYU has posted in the last 10 years.

Our pass defense was bad. Very bad. And the main reason is that we asked our DBs to stick on their man forever because we couldn't get the kind of pressure needed to make a press man defense work.
