This also builds depth at multiple positions in case of injury or other
Unforeseen issues that may cause the team to suddenly be thin at a position. Instead there is some buikt in depth due to crosstraining and the deph is of the best 11 athletes BYU can get on the field.

If you have the traditional model of a 3 deep of guys trained at one position. There might not be a huge gap between 1 and 2 though there is a gap,but the gap betwenn1 and 3 is massive.Thus when 1 gets injured or whatever and 2 is pressed into play the new 2 is a liability, with crosstrained positions/athletes the new 1 2 will be the closest to the old 1 as possible and the new 2 as close to the old 2 keeping depth at a high level
