If you have the traditional model of a 3 deep of guys trained at one position. There might not be a huge gap between 1 and 2 though there is a gap,but the gap betwenn1 and 3 is massive.Thus when 1 gets injured or whatever and 2 is pressed into play the new 2 is a liability, with crosstrained positions/athletes the new 1 2 will be the closest to the old 1 as possible and the new 2 as close to the old 2 keeping depth at a high level
