I'm not sure that most people would agree that a lifestyle of premarital sex and
drinking are really what leads to the kind of childhood Neal suffered through, at least not the type of premarital sex and drinking that typical college kids engage in. The vast majority of people who drink or indulge in premarital sex do not treat children this way, nor do they live their lives in a way that creates this type of abuse and suffering for children. There are almost certainly many other, much more serious and deeply-rooted issues that caused the difficulties in Neal's childhood.

I think that non-Mormons often resent Mormons for this type of judgmental, accusatory logic and worldview, which flies in the face of what most people experience. It's a bit like looking at Ted Bundy, Josh Powell, and the Lafferty Brothers and concluding that Mormonism leads to violent crime.
