Probably a lot has to do with marketing.
They can make cheap products, market it like crazy, and people buy it. Their idea was to make cheaper (not as good tasting) and available everywhere products that just became part of Americana. You can still get very good chocolate, mustard, breads, cheese, and candy... it's just typically not as well marketed, and at least somewhat more expensive.
Cheap, available, but not quite as good. Isn't that pretty much the American way?
