BYU stands up and says, "Look, we are going to run a pro style smashmouth offense. You had better stop us within thw first two downs or we are likely to run an 1/8 of the gameclock off and end up with points. Then when you do get the ball, our D is going to throttle you. If we get the ball first and you lets score, we are likely to have a score advantage after only 3 possessions, and you will only have three quarters to make up ground."
This system requires a high level of execution. BYU executes well, but not excellent. That will be the difference. One dropped pass, one missed block, one missed read, hurts worse when you are averaging half as many offensive plays.
