D's are trained to watch linemen. It helps them know if a play is a run or pass. If linemen fire off the ball and are
headed downfield then everyone knows it's a run play. Consider how many points are scored in a game today.... then consider how much more difficult it would be on the defense if the linemen weren't tipping them off so often....
