He wasn't given a chance. Giving someone a release isn't the same thing as
kicking them out. BYU refused to give him the release because he wanted to go to Utah. He even explored going to Utah and paying his own way, but he decided he couldn't afford that, so instead he decided to leave BYU and go to a JuCo, at which point he was released.
