Way more truth in this than some realize. At the FF last year, Randy Bennett
conducted a seminar on PNR and offensive basketball that moved and inspired the BYU coaches. Of course the poor results from the season sent Rose and company seeking inspiration and new knowledge.
Rose still derides the stat gurus in a way that might lead us to believe that they are not so important. But it is the winning coaches of the modern era who have implemented the new stat knowledge that originated from outside the profession in a way almost identical to what happened in baseball.
MLB resisted Bill James for 20 years until Billy Beane and the Oakland As. NBA and smart college coaches learned from the baseball experience and didn't ignore the stat gurus for long.
