I think it allows BYU to be in touch in a more appropriate manner with his
family, and maybe him, than if he was on a mission and was a Stanford or USC signee.

I think there is also a mental element ---- committing and signing now and then having to go back on that commitment and apologize to the coach and coordinator who recruited you is much more difficult than just saying that he is going to keep his options open and commit nowhere.
